Foil, embossing and spot UV begin as separate production shapes.

A finish may sit over printed colour, press into the sheet, catch the light on an unprinted area or combine several effects. The artwork has to describe that physical relationship clearly; a gold gradient or glossy screen mock-up cannot do the job alone.

First decide what the finish is meant to do.

Foil stamping transfers a metallic, pigmented or other decorative foil to selected areas using the specified process and tooling. Embossing and debossing change the surface by raising or pressing a shape. Spot UV and selected varnishes apply a coating to chosen artwork. These processes can be combined, but they do not share one universal file setup. A foil title may need a clean stamping shape; an emboss may need male and female tooling information; a spot coating behaves as a coverage mask over a printed surface.

Write down the intended moment in the hand. Is the finish marking a title, helping a logo stand apart, adding a tactile pattern, protecting a photograph or creating contrast between gloss and matt areas? Build a clean mask for each operation.

A finishing mask is commonly made from solid vector shapes assigned to a named spot colour. The display colour is chosen so the mask is easy to see; it does not predict the colour of the foil or coating. Keep the mask on its own clearly labelled layer and follow the exact swatch name requested by the supplier. If foil and spot UV are separate operations, they need separate names and separations even when some shapes overlap.

Use simple closed paths where possible. Remove stray points, hidden duplicates, accidental strokes and tiny fragments left by image tracing. A soft shadow, transparency blend or tonal photograph may look attractive as a mock-up but does not automatically describe a manufacturable die or coating plate. Where a tonal or textured effect is possible, obtain the required file method before building it.

Registration starts with the base artwork.

A finish aligned to printed text or a fine border makes any movement easier to notice. Avoid drawing the finishing object by eye in a second document. Duplicate the approved vector path from the main artwork, place it at the same coordinates and confirm that page size, trim and orientation match. Keep crop, fold and structural references consistent across every supplied file.

The workable detail depends on the material, tool, finish area, geometry and production method. Use the small type and fine lines check to flag fragile artwork; the job specification still sets the permitted line, gap and clearance requirements. For cartons, check the finish against the actual panel, crease and glue positions in the packaging dieline guidance.

Overlap and knockout must match the physical effect.

A coating over a photograph usually needs the image to remain beneath it, so the mask is represented as a separate spot operation without removing the CMYK image. A foil shape on bare paper may require a different knockout arrangement. Embossing can affect printed and unprinted areas, and a registered foil-and-emboss combination adds another alignment question. Do not infer these relationships from layer order alone.

Ask whether each special separation should overprint, knock out or be delivered separately. Then inspect the exported PDF using separations preview. Turn off CMYK and check each finishing plate on its own. Turn the finish off and confirm that the underlying artwork still contains exactly what was approved. Inspect each plate as set out in the overprint and knockout check, because an apparently harmless attribute can change what reaches a separation.

Folds, edges and large solids change the result.

A finish can behave differently near a fold, spine, cut edge, corner or deeply textured sheet. A large uninterrupted foil field asks different questions from a small title. Put the finished size and structural lines into the review so the effect is judged on the object, not as a floating shape on an artboard.

Where the effect crosses a hinge or wraps around packaging, request a physical review route appropriate to that structure. A flat digital simulation can confirm position and content, but it cannot reproduce relief, reflectivity, coating build, material stretch or the way light moves across a finished surface. For structured packaging, the prototype route can separate fit and handling questions from decoration.

Special-finish handover

Give every physical operation an unambiguous plate.

Swatch names, overprint settings, minimum detail and file arrangement must follow the supplier’s instructions for the selected process.

  1. Confirm foil, emboss, deboss, coating and printed colour as separate operations.
  2. Create clean vector masks with the requested spot-colour names.
  3. Align masks to the approved base artwork, trim and structure.
  4. Check delicate gaps, edges, folds, hinges and registration-sensitive details.
  5. Preview every special separation independently in the exported PDF.
  6. Provide a labelled composite mock-up where the intended appearance is not obvious.
  7. Approve a suitable physical sample when texture, shine or relief carries the decision.

Artwork questions for finishing

The production mask should be simpler than the visual mock-up.

Can I show foil with a metallic gradient in the CMYK artwork?

A gradient can be useful in a visual mock-up, but it does not define a foil operation. Supply the agreed foil area as a named spot separation and state the intended foil reference separately.

Should spot UV artwork overprint the image below?

Often the intention is to coat the printed image without removing it, but the exact attribute and file method belong to the receiving workflow. Confirm the instruction and verify both the coating separation and underlying CMYK artwork.

Can the same shape be foiled and embossed?

Combined effects may be possible, but alignment, tooling, material and artwork tolerances need to be assessed together. Keep each operation identifiable and request the file setup and sample route for that combination.
