Define the reader’s moment and expected action.
Someone may encounter a package on a shelf, open it at home, check an instruction, look for care information, register a product or return to a refill route. Those are different journeys. Write one sentence about the action you want to help with before choosing a tap symbol, call to action or landing page. “Tap for more” is vague; “Tap for the assembly guide” tells the reader and the project team what must be ready.
Then decide whether the physical object still explains its essential information without a device. A tap can extend a printed experience, but it should not quietly remove a required instruction, visible identifier or other information that the reader must access in the physical context.
Give the NFC tap and printed code distinct jobs.
NFC and a QR code can both connect a physical item to digital information, yet the reader’s action is different. One is a tap; the other asks for a visible code and a scan. They may share a destination or have different purposes. Describe the chosen interaction and its fallback route rather than assuming a reader will understand either technology from a logo alone.
The 2D Barcodes on Packaging Guide covers the separate questions around QR, retail and connected codes. A barcode that scans and an NFC interaction that opens a page are not, by themselves, proof that the product information, data permissions or commercial system behind them is complete.
Place the tap point on the real object.
Location is a design and packaging question. Consider where a reader naturally holds the pack, whether the point is reachable before or after opening, what surface surrounds it, which other components are nearby and whether the printed instruction remains visible at the moment of use. A flat dieline can make a location appear obvious; an assembled pack can reveal that a fold, insert, metalised panel, closure or product itself changes the interaction.
Use a dummy or prototype to test the intended action with the actual form factor. The purpose is not to declare a universal tag or phone-performance result. It is to find out whether the reader can discover the intended interaction and understand what it is for in this particular design.
Give the destination and data an owner.
The printed pack may remain in circulation while a linked page, campaign, product information or consent wording changes. Keep a record of the destination, content owner, update process, analytics or data responsibility where relevant, fallback route and version of the printed artwork. If an interaction involves a person’s information, promotion, authentication claim or regulated content, the responsible owner needs to decide the appropriate privacy, legal and technical requirements.
NFC hardware, authentication, payment, data processing, device compatibility and compliance sit outside an artwork specification. Name the responsible technical and data owners, then confirm the physical packaging scope separately in writing.
Test the reader story, then preserve the record.
Ask an unfamiliar person to find the tap point, understand the instruction and use the fallback if needed. Record the physical pack version, destination, content purpose and observations. If the carton structure, artwork, product, destination or reader instruction changes, reopen the relevant check instead of assuming the original test still describes the new object.
