Grain belongs to the sheet, then to the finished page.
In most machine-made papers, fibres tend to align more strongly in the machine direction. The sheet usually bends more readily with that direction and resists more across it. Merchants may describe a parent sheet as long grain or short grain, but those labels refer to the sheet dimensions at that stage.
Describe grain in relation to the finished object: parallel or perpendicular to the spine, fold or hinge. Include a simple arrow on a dummy or specification. That remains understandable after the sheet has been trimmed, imposed or renamed. Paper grain is separate from the visible texture of a laid, embossed or patterned surface, although both may have an orientation that matters to the design.
Books generally want the grain running with the spine.
When the grain runs parallel to the spine, pages usually turn and flex with less resistance. Folded sections can form a cleaner spine, and a page block is less inclined to fight the binding as it opens. Grain across the spine can make pages spring closed, distort the fold or place more stress on coated and heavier papers. The effect becomes more noticeable in some formats and materials than in others.

Folded signatures reveal the direction early.
Saddle-stitched and section-sewn books begin with sheets folded into sections or signatures. A fold whose line runs parallel to the grain generally forms more willingly than one forced across it, particularly as paper becomes heavier, coated or otherwise less forgiving. Cracking, a rounded fold and pages that will not lie comfortably can all prompt a closer grain and scoring discussion.
The final imposition determines how pages sit on the press sheet and where each fold occurs. State any opening requirement, cross-spread image or fold-sensitive feature, and let the production plan preserve both page order and the intended grain relationship.
Perfect-bound and casebound books involve more than the text paper.
In an adhesive-bound book, the page block must flex near the spine while remaining secure. Grain direction influences that movement alongside paper surface, bulk and binding preparation. A stiff cross-grain text stock can make a narrow or thick book feel reluctant to open. The inner margin may then seem tighter in use even when the layout measurement has not changed. Grain direction can change the efficient sheet plan.
Rotating a page on a press sheet can improve material yield, but it may also turn the grain across the spine. Preserving the preferred direction can reduce the number of pages or covers that fit on a sheet, affect which parent-sheet size is suitable or narrow the available paper choices.
Raise the question while trim, stock and binding are still open. A small format change, another parent sheet or a comparable paper may improve the plan without weakening the reading experience. Have the finished grain direction recorded in the specification; the paper name alone does not confirm it, and the offered material, imposition and finished format all affect the result.
A dummy turns fibre direction into a reading decision.
Comparing loose swatches will show colour, texture and opacity, but it says little about a bound page. Fold samples in both directions and note the difference, then handle a dummy made to the proposed trim and approximate extent. Open it near the front, centre and back. Look for spring, gutter loss, fold cracking, cover curl and whether pages settle naturally during the intended use.
