Colour conversion

RGB colour does not move onto paper unchanged.

Screens make colour with light; most full-colour commercial print builds it from cyan, magenta, yellow and black on a physical surface. The conversion is manageable when the source, output condition and sensitive colours are known.

A bright screen and a printed sheet have different limits.

RGB describes colour made by red, green and blue light. CMYK describes process inks that absorb and reflect light from paper. Their reproducible colour ranges overlap, but they are not identical. Intense electric blues, vivid greens, glowing oranges and very saturated shadows can sit comfortably on a modern display yet move when translated into a particular ink-and-paper condition.

That movement is not evidence that every RGB file is unusable. It means the conversion needs a defined route. An image-led art book, a short digital run and a brand-critical carton may be handled differently. The printer’s requested PDF standard, output profile and proofing route matter more than a blanket instruction copied from another job.

Keep the master artwork; make the production conversion traceable.

Photographers and illustrators often benefit from retaining an edited RGB master because it preserves a wider working colour range for future outputs. The production PDF can then be exported for the agreed print condition. Save that exported file as a distinct version rather than overwriting the master. If a different paper or process is chosen later, the team still has a reliable source from which to make another conversion.

A document may contain RGB photographs, CMYK logos, spot colours and greys at the same time. Converting each asset casually in different applications can produce inconsistent results. Profiles describe conditions; they are not decorative file labels.

An ICC profile gives colour-management software information about a colour space or output condition. A conversion uses that information to map colours from one space to another. Selecting a profile without knowing the intended process, paper direction or export policy can be worse than leaving the conversion to an agreed production workflow. Ask which preset and profile the printer wants rather than choosing the profile whose name sounds most professional.

Embedding or tagging source profiles can help software interpret what the numbers mean. Assigning a different profile changes that interpretation; converting changes the numbers in an attempt to preserve appearance. Those operations are not interchangeable. When colour is commercially sensitive, retain the original file and make any conversion on a controlled copy.

Judge the colours that carry meaning, not every pixel equally.

A food photograph may depend on believable skin, fruit or sauce colour. A fashion catalogue may contain one fabric tone that buyers recognise. A company mark may need to sit beside earlier stationery. Identify those areas in the brief. They deserve a closer soft-proof or physical-proof conversation than a background texture whose exact hue has no commercial consequence.

CMYK percentages alone do not promise a universal appearance. The same values can look different on coated and uncoated papers and under different production conditions. Neutral greys, small black type and deep black areas need separate thought.

Small black text is normally treated differently from a large dark background. A multi-ink black construction on fine type can expose registration movement, while a broad solid using black ink alone may appear less dense than the designer expected. The appropriate build depends on the process and printer specification; it should not be guessed from a random online formula.

Neutral photographs and grey tints can also reveal small colour imbalances. Review important monochrome images under the intended conversion and proof conditions. Acrobat or another production tool can show separations and object colour spaces, but the report still needs a person who understands which objects were meant to remain neutral and which were deliberately coloured.

Make one controlled route from source colour to print colour.

Colour management reduces surprises; it does not make a luminous screen and printed paper physically identical.

  1. Retain edited source images and their embedded profiles.
  2. Ask for the current PDF preset, output condition and colour policy.
  3. List saturated, neutral, brand-critical or product-critical areas.
  4. Export a named production PDF without destroying the master artwork.
  5. Inspect separations, unexpected spot colours and black construction.
  6. Review the right kind of proof and record the accepted production file.

The answer depends on the output condition, not the file extension.

Must every image be converted to CMYK before layout?

Not in every workflow. Some colour-managed workflows retain tagged RGB images until export or production. Others request prepared CMYK assets. Follow the printer’s preset and preserve the RGB master so a conversion can be remade if the output condition changes.

Why did a vivid blue become duller after conversion?

The original blue may sit outside the reproducible range of the selected CMYK condition. The conversion maps it to an available colour. A designer can review alternative artwork, ink or proof options, but no generic setting can make every screen colour appear unchanged on paper.

Does a CMYK PDF guarantee accurate colour?

No. CMYK only describes the colour model. Profiles, ink limits, paper, process stability, spot colours, proof conditions and the values used in the artwork all affect the result.
