Presentation-box file setup

Prepare rigid-box artwork for wrapped edges, corners and separate parts.

A rigid box is built from board pieces covered with a printed or decorative wrap. Artwork travels over faces, turns around edges and meets seams, so a flat rectangle rarely tells the whole story.

The wrap follows the confirmed box construction.

A lift-off lid, hinged presentation box, drawer box and shoulder-and-neck box contain different parts and visible faces. Even two boxes with the same external length and width can need different wraps because lid depth, base exposure, hinge position and internal lining change the structure. Confirm the complete product arrangement and request the accepted template for each printed component.

Treat a visual mock-up as a design reference, not a production pattern. The approved template identifies faces, turn-ins, seams and areas that may be covered by another piece. Keep those guides on separate locked layers and use the naming convention supplied for the job. The rigid gift-box brief records the product and opening details needed at the start.

Mark the assembled orientation of every face.

Flat wrap panels may appear rotated or separated in a template even though they meet on the finished box. Place temporary face labels and arrows outside the live artwork: lid top, front edge, left side, base and any inner panel. Build a reduced paper dummy, fold the labels around it and confirm which way the customer reads the box when it sits closed and when it opens.

This is particularly important for side-panel copy and repeating patterns. A wordmark can arrive upside down on one edge, while stripes may reverse direction where two wrap pieces meet. If the box has a drawer or magnetic flap, test the artwork through the complete opening movement. The first panel visible to the customer may not be the panel that looked most prominent in the flat file.

Give seams and corners artwork they can carry.

Wrap material turns over rigid board edges and is folded at corners. A narrow frame, fine line or small letter placed close to that transition can look uneven when the material bends and the corner is formed. Broad colour, continuous texture and imagery with non-critical edge detail are generally more forgiving, but the exact turn-in and visible area must come from the current template.

Corner folds can create local overlaps in the wrap. A perfectly repeating geometric pattern may call attention to every join, while a photograph can lose a face or product detail around an edge. Print the relevant area at actual size and fold it over a simple board mock-up. Do not retouch the artwork to a guessed corner shape without understanding how the proposed construction forms that corner.

Coordinate the lid, base, drawer and insert as one presentation.

A two-piece box creates relationships between the lid and base. A colour break may need to continue when closed, a side message may appear only after the lid lifts, and a shoulder can become a deliberate band around the product. Drawer boxes add a pull direction and reveal sequence. Record which artwork belongs to each part rather than supplying one flattened image with no component names.

Internal colour and insert material influence the reveal. Place representative contents into the proposed insert and check what the customer sees through every stage of opening. Check restraint and removal against the packaging insert requirements; the wrap artwork should support that physical sequence without implying that an unconfirmed insert, lining or decoration is included.

Finishes need their own positions and proof questions.

Foil, embossing, debossing and spot gloss can cross a rigid-box face, but they should not be assumed to behave unchanged over an edge, seam or corner. Keep approved finish masks separate from process artwork and identify the intended face. Fine detail, registration and suitable distance from structural transitions follow the material and production specification.

Choose an effect by touch and use with the print finishes comparison. A flat PDF can confirm mask position, while a material sample or decorated prototype may be needed to judge reflection, texture and physical interaction. Ask which part of the proposed production build the sample represents, particularly when wrap paper, board, finish or assembly method differs.

Wrap review

Follow the artwork around the closed and opened box.

Use the structural and wrap templates supplied for the quoted construction; dimensions from a reference box are not enough.

  1. Label every face and mark its assembled reading direction.
  2. Keep critical type and detail clear of edges, seams and corners.
  3. Test repeating patterns and cross-part alignments on a mock-up.
  4. Match lid, base, drawer and insert artwork to the component list.
  5. Separate finish masks and identify the face they belong to.
  6. Inspect full-size corner and edge details on paper or a sample.
  7. Reopen the final PDFs and record the approved files by component.

A wrap is read after it has turned around the box.

Can I use a folding-carton dieline for a rigid box?

No. A folding carton is cut and creased from a sheet, while a rigid box is assembled from board pieces and wrap material. Their templates describe different constructions and artwork transitions.

Can a logo wrap around a rigid-box edge?

It may be possible, but bending, edge position and the visible faces can affect the result. Flag the intention and review it on the template and an appropriate physical sample rather than assuming a flat logo will remain unchanged around the turn.

Will a repeating pattern meet perfectly at every corner?

Perfect continuity should not be assumed. Corner folds, overlaps, wrap position and assembly tolerances can interrupt a strict repeat. A more forgiving pattern or deliberate join can make the finished design feel controlled.

Does a decorated prototype prove the production finish?

Only to the extent stated for that sample. Confirm whether wrap paper, board, print method, finish and assembly match the quoted production route and which visual or structural decisions the prototype is intended to approve.
