The agreed board construction comes ahead of polished artwork.
The same open size can be built from different numbers of panels and can close in more than one direction. Those choices change where hinges meet, which panels turn over during folding and how thick the closed board becomes. Supply the intended open and closed dimensions, the preferred fold sequence and the box space available, then work on the structural template accepted for that project.
A concept sketch is helpful for describing play, but it is not a production dieline. Keep structural marks on their own locked layer and follow the naming and line conventions supplied with the template. The board-game component checklist keeps the board dimensions connected to the box, insert, rules and other parts of the finished set.
Map the board in both its open and folded states.
When the board is open, players need paths, spaces, labels and illustrations to read in the intended orientation from their positions around the table. When it is folded, a panel may rotate, turn face down or become the visible outer face. Mark each panel with a working identifier and an arrow outside the live artwork, then make a small paper dummy to confirm the movement.
Symmetrical artwork can conceal an orientation mistake until words or icons are added. Place a temporary asymmetric marker on every panel during the fold test. Check the top-left and bottom-right corners of the open board against the folded sample, then remove the temporary markers from the production layer once the relationship is understood.
Treat hinge areas as working parts of the game.
A route line, grid, territory border or instruction that crosses a hinge may be interrupted visually when the board is handled. Important junctions and small labels are safer when they do not depend on a perfectly continuous line through a fold. Broad textures and landscapes can cross more comfortably, provided the designer understands what part of the image may be influenced by the hinge construction.
The correct clearance is job-specific. Do not draw a generic strip over every fold and call it a safe zone; the production template should identify relevant hinge, gap, wrap and cut information. If the board contains spaces that must align precisely across panels, flag them in the brief and include them in the physical review rather than leaving production to infer their importance.
Keep play information clear of trim, corners and crowded seams.
Outer artwork that reaches the finished edge needs the bleed shown on the template. Numbers, paths, scoring tracks and legal or safety information need room inside the cut. A decorative frame around the complete board can reveal cutting variation in the same way as a playing-card border, while a frame around every panel can make hinge differences even more prominent.
Review text at the distance from which it will be read during play. A label may face one player, several players or the person managing a particular area of the board. For dense tracks, reference panels and icon keys, work from the tables, charts and instructions checks. Keep the rulebook terminology and board labels consistent so the physical game does not teach two names for the same action.
A folded dummy answers questions a flat PDF cannot.
Print a reduced mock-up early to test panel order and a full-size section to test type, spaces and handling. Fold it in the proposed sequence, put it into a simple box mock-up and open it as a player would. Notice which surface appears first, whether the board wants to spring open, and whether any important element sits directly on a joint.
A paper dummy does not prove the strength, finish, flatness or lifetime of a production board. Ask what a structural or decorated sample can represent for the quoted route. Add a colour review when the map, playing spaces or illustrated surface carries colour-critical information as well as structural concerns.
