Die-cut game components

Punchboard artwork has to survive the cut and still make sense on the table.

A punchboard may hold coins, markers, tiles and counters in one printed sheet. The artwork works best when the component list, cut paths, front-to-back orientation and player-facing information all describe the same finished set.

Give every piece an identity outside the artwork file.

A sheet full of attractive circles can still be difficult to quote, proof and pack if nobody can tell which token belongs where. Build a simple inventory with an identifier, component name, shape, quantity per game, printed sides and any version or language variation. A label such as “red damage marker, 12 per game, same artwork both sides” is much easier to follow than a layer called “tokens final 3”. Keep the inventory independent of the layout position. Tokens may move around a sheet as the cutting plan develops, while their identifiers and required counts should remain stable. Where several pieces look similar, small working labels outside the live artwork can help the designer and production team trace them. Those labels belong in the working file or proof notes, away from the printed face of the component.

Treat the cut path as engineering information, not decoration.

The production path defines the finished shape, but it should stay separate from printable graphics. Use the layer names, colours and line treatment supplied for the project. Lock that structural layer while placing artwork, and keep it visible in the review PDF unless the requested workflow says otherwise. A concept cut path can communicate the intended shape; the production-ready path still depends on the quoted tooling and sheet plan.

Background colour and imagery normally extend beyond the cut, while numbers, icons and narrow borders need room inside it. The exact allowances follow the current template rather than a value carried over from a card or carton. Borders close to a circular cut deserve particular attention because a slight visual shift is easy to notice all the way around.

Front and back artwork need a physical orientation test.

A two-sided sheet can look correct on screen and still pair the wrong backs with the fronts. Number the pieces, mark the intended top edge where orientation matters and make a paper dummy. Print the front sheet, print or trace the reverse, align them and cut out a few asymmetric examples. Arrows, character portraits, directional icons and shaped tiles expose a flip error more quickly than a plain round coin.

Artwork that repeats on every reverse still needs a pairing check. A shared back may be centred differently from the front, and an irregular token can rotate unexpectedly when the sheet is turned. Review the full sheet, then review the loose pieces.

The imposed sheet reveals missing quantities, duplicated pieces, inconsistent spacing and artwork sitting on the wrong cut path. The loose components reveal another set of questions: Is a value readable in the hand? Can two similar markers be distinguished across the table? Does an icon remain clear after the surrounding waste is removed? Are the edges and corners comfortable for the way the piece is handled?

Count a complete game from the reviewed component set. Use the same names that appear in the rulebook and packing list, then place the pieces into the proposed insert or bag arrangement. Any late change to shape, thickness, count or finish can affect the tool, sheet, box and assembly plan. Sheet review

Follow each token from the inventory to the game box.

The project template settles the production allowances. This list checks whether the artwork and component logic remain aligned.

  1. Compare the required count with every piece placed on the sheet.
  2. Match each face to its reverse and mark directional artwork.
  3. Extend backgrounds through the supplied bleed area.
  4. Keep values, icons and borders comfortably inside the cut.
  5. Test several asymmetric pieces with a front-and-back paper dummy.
  6. Read loose tokens at their intended distance and lighting.
  7. Count one packed game using the same component names as the rules.

Can I draw my own token cut paths?

A designer can supply concept shapes and dimensions to communicate the idea. Production paths depend on tooling, spacing, material and the quoted sheet plan, so artwork should move onto the structural file accepted for that job.

How much bleed should punchboard tokens have?

Use the allowance shown on the current token template. Shape, cutting method and production route can change the requirement, and a value from a rectangular card file may be unsuitable for a small circular or irregular piece.

Can every token on a punchboard have a different shape?

Different shapes may be possible, but they affect tooling, nesting, waste and cost. Supply the complete shape list early so the project can be assessed as one sheet rather than a sequence of late additions.

Should component names be printed on every token?

Only when the player benefits from seeing them. Small pieces may work better with a clear icon or number tied to the rulebook. Working identifiers can remain outside the printed face while still keeping the artwork, rules and packing list aligned.
