Four familiar labels refer to different kinds of control.
ISO 12647 is a family of international standards for process control in graphic production. Part 2 addresses process parameters and values for offset lithographic printing, including defined print conditions. A standard describes how a condition can be controlled and assessed; the three letters “ISO” on a quote do not identify which part, dataset, substrate or tolerance the supplier means.
Fogra publishes characterisation datasets for defined printing conditions as well as exchange colour spaces used in colour communication. Data for a printing condition can support ICC profiles and proof evaluation. GRACoL is a print specification developed for commercial printing in North America. G7 is a specification and calibration methodology focused on tonality and grey balance across different output systems. A G7-calibrated device can still be working toward a named print condition; G7 and an ISO or Fogra condition cover different parts of colour control.
FOGRA51 and FOGRA52 are common modern references associated with different paper and printing conditions: broadly, premium coated and uncoated paper conditions using optical-brightener-aware measurement. The matching ICC profiles, such as PSO Coated v3 or PSO Uncoated v3, let colour-managed software translate image values toward those expected conditions. The exact profile named in the artwork workflow matters more than the vague instruction “use FOGRA”.
A real paper may be warmer, bluer, rougher, more absorbent or differently brightened than the reference condition. Ink set, solid density, screening and press behaviour also influence the printed result. Colour management aims to make conversion and evaluation more predictable; it cannot erase the physical character of the chosen substrate. GRACoL and FOGRA are not a simple US-versus-Europe quality ranking.
People sometimes treat GRACoL and FOGRA as rival quality badges. They are better understood as routes to defined colour appearance under their respective specifications and reference conditions. Use the reference condition specified for the files, proof and proposed press. This is a choice of colour target, not a quality ranking between printers.
Trouble appears when an image is converted for one condition, a proof simulates another, and the press is judged against neither. Rich blacks, neutral greys, shadow detail and saturated colours can separate differently under different profiles. Record the source profile, conversion profile, rendering choice where relevant, and the condition the contract proof is intended to simulate.
G7 uses neutral print density curves and grey-balance targets to align the visual tonality of an output process. Neutral greys are powerful process indicators because shifts in cyan, magenta and yellow balance are easy to see. The method can help different devices produce a shared neutral appearance even when their colourants and substrates differ.
That alignment does not make two devices identical throughout the colour gamut. Paper shade, primary ink colours, overprints and achievable darks still define the boundary of each system. Spot inks, metallic effects and fluorescent colours sit outside a normal CMYK grey-balance claim. Ask which target condition was used, what was measured, and whether the stated qualification is current and applies to the production line proposed for the job.
A contract proof needs a named aim and evidence that it reached it.
A colour-accurate proof normally simulates a stated printing condition on a calibrated proofing system. A control strip can be measured to check whether the proof falls within the chosen tolerance. The proof paper itself may not resemble the production stock in feel, but its colour appearance is adjusted to represent the target under specified viewing light. A proof without a target condition or verification record may still be valuable for content, yet it should not be mistaken for measured colour evidence.
Soft proofs depend on a characterised monitor, controlled lighting and correct profile use. Physical proofs add a stable object for approval but can have limits for spot colours, coatings and paper texture. The soft and hard proof comparison helps select a format by the decision it must support. Write the approved proof’s identifier into the job record so a later PDF or printout does not quietly replace it.
Record the exact target condition.
For colour-sensitive work, ask for the intended printing process, substrate class, characterisation dataset or ICC output profile, proof target and acceptance method. Confirm the lighting condition used for visual assessment. Brand spot colours need their own named references and tolerances because a CMYK process standard does not define a Pantone or custom-ink match.
Put those details beside the material and proof scope in the written quote. If the job changes from coated to uncoated paper or moves to another production process, reopen the colour decision.
