“Self-cover” describes a construction, not a visual style.
In a self-cover booklet, the outer pages and the interior normally use the same paper specification and pass through the folded construction together. The first and last pages act as the cover. A separate-cover booklet uses a cover component that differs from the text section, often in stock, weight, print treatment or finish, before the pieces are gathered and stitched.
Either direction can look considered. A self-cover can feel light, direct and economical for a short programme, price list or campaign piece. A separate cover can create contrast and added protection for a manual, substantial brochure or keepsake. The label does not settle quality; the reader’s use, page extent and complete production specification do.
Count the cover explicitly in the page plan.
Confusion often begins when one person says “16 pages” and another assumes that means 16 text pages plus a four-page cover. Write the extent in plain terms: for example, “16 pages self-cover” or “16 text pages plus four-page cover”. The actual folded and stitched plan follows the selected route, but that wording keeps the quote, artwork and proof aligned.
Front cover, inside front cover, inside back cover and back cover are all physical pages. If an inside cover is meant to remain blank, keep it in the pagination record rather than hoping production inserts a blank. The pagination and intentional-blank notes show how a simple page schedule prevents an omitted or duplicated surface.
Different paper creates different folding and handling behaviour.
A heavier cover can feel protective, but its thickness, grain and stiffness must still suit the finished size, fold and stitch. A bulky stock can resist a neat fold or make a short booklet feel cover-heavy. A very light self-cover can curl or show reverse-side content more readily, depending on the sheet and ink coverage. No single gsm boundary divides the two constructions responsibly.
Compare caliper as well as grammage. Nested folded sheets build thickness towards the centre, and a separate cover adds its own material around that group. Page count and stock also influence creep, the outward movement of inner folded sheets. Production imposition may compensate for it, but narrow borders, outer-edge folios and crossovers can still make the movement noticeable. A separate cover can carry a separate surface decision.
A cover may need heavier colour coverage, a different shade, lamination, varnish or a tactile finish while the interior remains easy to read or write on. That is a reason to explore a separate cover, not proof that every available effect will suit the fold. Scores, coatings and films need to be compatible with the chosen stock and finishing route.
Self-cover work can still have a strong opening. A well-composed first page, deliberate paper and disciplined ink coverage may serve the job better than an added component. Compare both options using the same trim, text extent, quantity and delivery requirement. The budget and specification framework keeps a lower quote from disguising a different product.
Distribution settles details that the desk cannot.
A booklet handed out at one meeting has a different working life from one posted without an envelope, carried in a training bag or kept beside equipment. Describe whether the cover must resist repeated opening, accept handwriting, stay flat in a pack or carry a postal address. Those conditions help the paper and finish discussion become specific.
For approval, compare an actual-size folded representation of each construction. Check the cover-to-text contrast, opening, centre spread, inner-sheet projection, stitch position and smallest text. A colour proof may answer image questions without demonstrating the final nested bulk, so record exactly what the sample represents.
