GSM measures mass per area, not the height of the sheet.
Paper grammage is expressed in grams per square metre, usually shortened to gsm or g/m². The measurement method is defined in ISO 536: a known area of paper or board is weighed under specified conditions and converted to mass per square metre. It is a valuable purchasing reference because it lets people compare nominal weights without relying on sheet size. It does not say how many micrometres thick the sheet will be.
A heavily compressed coated sheet and a more open, lightly compacted uncoated sheet can share the same grammage. Their fibres, fillers, coating layers and manufacturing finish distribute that mass differently. One may feel smooth, dense and relatively thin; the other may feel softer and more substantial between the fingers. A quote that states only “120gsm paper” therefore leaves an important physical property undecided.
Caliper gives the thickness; bulk relates thickness to weight.
Caliper is the thickness of a single sheet measured under a stated pressure, commonly reported in micrometres or millimetres. ISO 534 describes methods for single-sheet thickness, bulking thickness, density and specific volume. Pressure matters because paper is compressible: a measurement made with a different instrument or procedure may not be directly comparable. Supplier technical sheets are the practical reference for the exact stock under consideration.
Bulk is often used to describe how much thickness a paper provides for its grammage. In technical data it may appear as specific volume in cubic centimetres per gram, or as a bulk factor. A higher-bulk paper generally builds a thicker page block at the same nominal gsm. Terminology and rounding vary between suppliers, so compare like with like and use the stated caliper when the finished thickness is commercially important.
Imagine two 100gsm papers whose technical sheets list different calipers. The difference on one leaf may look trivial. Multiply it through hundreds of leaves and it becomes part of the spine width, case fit, dust-jacket wrap and packing volume. The final spine calculation also depends on the actual binding construction and manufacturing allowance. Build the cover from the confirmed text stock and extent, not an online paper-weight formula.
This is why a last-minute stock substitution can disturb a cover that was already approved. The printed pages may contain exactly the same content, yet the replacement stock can alter the book block enough to move spine lettering or change how a flap meets the fore-edge. Thickness does not settle opacity, stiffness or print character.
Bulk, opacity and stiffness are separate properties. Opacity is the resistance to show-through from the reverse side; stiffness depends on fibre structure, thickness, grain direction, moisture and other properties; surface finish affects ink holdout, dot appearance and writing feel. A higher GSM confirms only that the sheet has more mass per unit area.
A novel with dense black text may need comfortable opacity and a pleasant turning feel. A photography book may place greater weight on surface, colour response and image detail. Technical data narrows the field, but touch words such as “substantial”, “soft” or “crisp” remain subjective. Ask for the mill or merchant name, range, finish, nominal grammage, shade, caliper and availability of the proposed stock. If the tactile result matters, compare labelled samples under the light and handling conditions closest to the finished use. An unprinted swatch shows the base material; a printed sample reveals ink coverage, contrast and surface interaction.
Keep the chosen reference with the approved specification. Paper mills publish nominal or typical values, and some also state tolerances; normal batch-to-batch variation remains. Even so, a named stock is far more controllable than a description such as “premium white 120gsm”. When an alternative is proposed, compare its data and physical sample instead of accepting gsm as proof of equivalence.
The quote should identify the property that matters to the finished job.
If spine width is critical, include the final page extent and ask for the caliper used in the production calculation. If mailing weight matters, provide the finished format, page count, cover, inserts and quantity per pack; sheet grammage alone cannot predict a packed consignment.
