Nested-sheet movement

The inner sheets of a booklet have farther to travel.

Stack several sheets, fold them together and look at the fore-edge: the inner folds push progressively outwards. A saddle-stitched booklet behaves in the same physical way. Trimming produces a clean finished edge, while the artwork on those inner pages may sit slightly differently in relation to that edge unless the production plan accounts for the movement.

Creep grows through the nested stack.

Each folded sheet wraps around the sheets inside it. Paper thickness may be small on one leaf, yet it accumulates through the booklet. Pages near the centre are displaced farther outwards than pages near the cover. This progressive movement is commonly called creep or shingling. It is a consequence of the folded construction, not evidence that the page sequence was assembled incorrectly.

How much appears in the finished object depends on the number of nested sheets, their caliper, the cover arrangement, fold, trim and equipment. A short booklet on a compact sheet may show little. A bulkier publication can make the centre projection obvious. GSM alone cannot calculate it because sheets with the same weight can have different thickness. The paper caliper notes help keep those properties separate.

Production imposition systems can move page content by calculated amounts before output. That compensation is tied to the actual job. A designer should not copy an offset table from another booklet or slide alternating pages manually. Supply normal reader pages and ask how the proposed route manages creep.

Some layouts make ordinary movement look severe.

A full-bleed photograph is often visually forgiving at the outer edge because the image continues past trim. A narrow border parallel to the trim gives the eye a ruler. If it becomes slightly narrower on an inner page, the difference is easy to see. Repeated colour tabs, page numbers sitting close to the fore-edge and rules that are meant to align through the whole booklet create the same sensitivity.

Crossovers need a separate judgement. An image travelling across the centre spread meets at one fold, while an image crossing two separate pages elsewhere is affected by page position, fold and the way the reader opens the booklet. Do not place a face, product code or thin diagonal line on a join unless the design accepts the physical interruption.

Outer-edge indexes can still work when they are designed with room for movement and judged across the complete sequence. Print thumbnails will not reveal this. Review several representative pages at final size: one near the front, one midway and the centre spread. The bleed, trim and safe-area guidance provides the wider edge vocabulary.

Compensation can protect position, but it cannot redesign the page.

When a workflow applies creep compensation, page content may shift incrementally towards the spine relative to the trim. Background bleed must still remain sufficient after the shift, and live material still needs a comfortable relationship to both inner and outer edges. A technical adjustment cannot make a fragile one-millimetre visual frame tolerant of every normal production movement.

Keep master-page objects consistent and flag elements whose relative position is commercially important. If folios are deliberately close to an edge, say so. If a colour tab must remain visible when the booklet is closed, identify the pages and show the desired result on a physical reference. Silent assumptions are difficult to protect during imposition and trimming.

A folded paper dummy shows the pattern immediately.

Make a rough nested dummy at the proposed trim using paper of a comparable thickness. Number every page, draw an outer border and mark several folio positions. The model will not predict the production tolerance or exact compensation, but it makes the direction of movement easy to understand. It can also expose a mistaken page order or an inside cover that was not counted.

A more representative sample can answer whether the chosen paper, extent and design sit comfortably together. Check the centre spread, narrow frames, page tabs, crossovers, staple position and how the booklet closes. A loose colour sheet may show image tone while saying nothing about nested bulk, so keep the sample purpose in writing.

At file handover, provide single pages in reading order unless the job instruction states otherwise. Include final trim, extent, paper direction, cover construction and a short list of creep-sensitive pages. The binding comparison can be reopened if the nested construction no longer suits the extent or reading use.

Inspect pages at the cover, middle and centre.

A single favourite spread cannot represent the movement through a nested booklet.

  1. Confirm extent, cover construction and paper caliper.
  2. Supply reader pages rather than homemade printer spreads.
  3. Mark borders, tabs and folios that reveal position changes.
  4. Extend backgrounds through the project bleed after compensation.
  5. Fold an actual-size dummy and number every page.
  6. Ask what the approved sample proves about nested construction.

The amount belongs to the real booklet, not a universal table.

Is creep a printing fault?

Creep is the progressive outward displacement created by nested folded sheets. The production plan can compensate for its effect on artwork, while the design and paper choice determine how visible the remaining physical behaviour becomes.

Can I calculate creep from page count?

Page count alone is not enough. Paper caliper, cover, folded sheet arrangement, trim and equipment all matter. Use the calculation and imposition method confirmed for the quoted construction.

Should I move inner-page artwork myself?

Normally, supply correctly sized reader pages and let the agreed production workflow apply job-specific imposition and compensation. Flag artwork that is sensitive so it can be reviewed rather than inventing manual shifts.

Will wider margins remove creep?

Wider breathing room can make small movement less distracting and protect live content, but it does not remove the nested-sheet geometry. Paper, extent, compensation and design still need to be considered together.
