The seam has a physical job.
A glue flap is not spare board. It overlaps another panel so an adhesive can join the carton during conversion or packing. The exact flap, overlap and adhesive route belong to the approved structural design. A designer may see only a narrow shape beside the artwork; the maker sees a surface that must pass through folding and gluing without an avoidable barrier between the board and the proposed adhesive.
That distinction matters when colour, varnish, laminate, foil or another treatment approaches the seam. A surface treatment chosen for appearance can change the bonding surface or create a visible step at the join. It can also make glue squeeze or a misaligned overlap more noticeable. The packaging dieline checks help keep cut, crease, glue and artwork information distinct while the file is still easy to revise.
Read the glue zone from the current structure.
Use the production dieline supplied for the actual size, board and construction. A generic box template may show roughly where a flap sits, but it cannot confirm the converter's seam, overlap, tolerances or layer conventions. Keep the structural drawing at the supplied scale and identify which side is printed, which panel receives the flap and which line represents the outer edge after assembly.
A marked glue or no-coat zone should be treated as production information, not as a decorative suggestion. If the desired artwork genuinely needs to cross that area, raise the conflict rather than hiding the marking or extending a finish by habit. The solution could involve a different artwork boundary, a revised construction or another confirmed production choice. It cannot be settled by assuming that a rule from a previous carton will transfer unchanged.
Let the visible panel finish deliberately.
The outside design may need colour to appear continuous around the side of the assembled pack. Continuity does not always mean covering every hidden millimetre of the flap. Extend backgrounds only as the approved structure allows, and judge the visible seam on a folded sample. Keep fine borders, small type and critical brand marks away from a join whose final appearance depends on folding and overlap.
Inside printing needs the same discipline. A message on the inner panel can approach the seam from the other direction, while a two-sided coating or dense ink area may affect a surface intended for bonding. Label the outside and inside artwork clearly. The finishing-mask guidance is useful when a spot effect also sits near the seam, because print and finish shapes should not be confused with the structural layer.
A flat proof cannot approve a glued carton.
A PDF proof can confirm content, panel orientation and the relationship between artwork and the indicated glue zone. It cannot demonstrate adhesive choice, fibre tear, seam strength, folding behaviour or the way the overlap looks after assembly. A plain structural sample may answer early fit and seam questions. A decorated and glued sample may be appropriate when the surface treatment or visible join is central to approval.
State the question attached to the sample. One team may need to inspect whether a side-panel tint ends neatly. Another may need to check whether a laminated outer surface leaves the specified bonding area untouched. A sample made from another board or by another method remains a reference, not proof that the production construction will behave identically. The packaging prototype route helps separate structure, decoration and production-representative evidence.
Carry the seam decision into approval.
The handover should identify the dieline version, printed sides, board direction, surface treatments and the exact panels involved in the seam. Keep the glue-zone instruction in the production file rather than relying on an email remembered by one person. If an exception has been agreed, record who confirmed it and which sample or technical response supports that decision.
A quotation can then describe the intended carton rather than a picture of a box: finished size, board, print sides, finish, structure, quantity, packing method and delivery point.
